Economy
Our district has a strong agricultural presence, and nationwide it is one of the most successful parts of our economy. To remain a world leader in agriculture we must ensure that regulations coming from Washington make sense and that our farm programs serve both the taxpayer and the farmer.
Our economy can do better than it has in recent years. In order to grow, we need to reform our tax code, strengthen workforce training programs, and ensure we have a smart regulatory system.
I frequently hear from my constituents about the excessive time and cost they spend doing taxes with our overly complicated, outdated tax code. The last major tax reform was passed in 1986 during the Reagan administration. In the last 30 years, we have seen the development of computers, the Internet, and cell phones. Yet, the tax code hasn’t been updated to reflect the modern world. I strongly support efforts to update and simplify our tax code to ease the burden on individuals, families, farmers, and businesses.
We also need to ensure our workforce is prepared for our modern economy. Prior to serving in Congress, I had a career in workforce training. I support career training programs because I have seen firsthand how job training can change the life of an individual and their family by setting them on the path to success.
We cannot regulate our way to a strong economy. The opposite is true: governmental overreach cripples the economy. From my years of running a business, I have firsthand knowledge of how excessive regulations make it harder to succeed. While some regulation is necessary, we need to ensure that the regulations we do have in place are smart: that they are necessary, designed efficiently and have the put the least possible strain on those trying to make the economy move.
Education
As a parent, I know that success looks different for each child. I frequently hear from parents, teachers, and school boards in my district that with more local flexibility, they can better meet the needs of students. As a member of the Committee on Education and the Workforce, I am focused on returning power where it belongs – with teachers, schools, and parents.
THE COLLEGE TRANSPARENCY ACT
Today’s students and their families need accurate, accessible, and comprehensive information to choose the college that best fits their individual needs. Unfortunately, important information about whether or not a particular college or major pays off for students is currently incomplete. I recently introduced the College Transparency Act to address the shortcomings of the current reporting system and enable students to make better informed enrollment decisions. Environment
I am committed to reducing America’s dependence on foreign energy. This means adopting an “all of the above” approach to domestic energy production. We must safely and responsibly develop the resources at our disposal to power our nation, while being mindful of any lasting impacts on the environment. We can achieve both goals.
We must protect our beautiful Great Lakes. In addition to being home to plants and wildlife, they also support our fishing and tourism industry, and are a source of drinking water. I am a member of the Great Lakes Task Force, dedicated to advancing policies and programs that protect environmental quality throughout the Great Lakes basin.
Health Care
Our health care system is in need of repair. Obamacare is unaffordable and unsustainable. Costs are rising while quality and choice of care are diminishing for Michigan families and businesses. Health insurance means little if those with it cannot find a doctor or afford their deductible or copays.
I am focused on preserving protections for patients with pre-existing conditions, providing Americans with more choices, lower costs, and greater flexibility. We will empower patients and doctors, increase choice and reduce costs.
Infrastructure
Our modern economy requires a robust infrastructure. As a member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, I understand how essential it is to protect and strengthen America’s critical infrastructure to keep Americans safe and to create jobs. Be it highways and bridges, rails and pipeline, aviation, or vessels, our multimodal system is what connects us to our daily lives and helps the economy move.
Veterans
We owe our veterans a debt of gratitude which can never be repaid. The personal and professional sacrifices our men and women who served made must be recognized, and I am committed to ensuring our veterans get the benefits they were promised. If you are a veteran having trouble getting the benefits you earned, please contact my office.
